As this is a natural product, the colors, size and shape may differ from the photo. Note that Abalone shells naturally have holes around the edges. Abalone are an endangered species. Our Abalone shells come from Abalone farms where both the meat and shells are sold. Abalone farms are a sustainable, environmentally friendly method of maintaining and supporting the wild Abalone population, while they reduce the risk of poaching in the wild. Farmed shells are distinguishable from wild shells by the fact that they are much cleaner and have fewer barnacles, imbedded stones, shells and other flaws. The outer shells of most farmed Abalone also have pink or brown and green layers running through them, indicative of the regular feeding patterns at the farms. These patterns are not as apparent in wild Abalone, since their feeding habits are more varied.
