"The Little Spirit Doll" is a children's book by Shelley Rose May (the Metis Mamma) that teaches children about trauma and healing, featuring illustrations that are gradually coloured in as the doll heals.

Summary:

The little spirit doll is made with clay and wood. The clay was taken without ceremony from her river bank home so the little spirit doll feels traumatized from being ripped from her home and feels that she has no name and noone who loves her. She goes on a journey to heal and with the help of friends and spirit guides, she finds her way. 

About the Author: Shelley Rose May

A self-taught mixed media artist of Cree and Scottish descent, Shelley Rose May was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and grew up in the small village of Christopher Lake. She lived in Calgary Alberta for 30 years, but now calls Rocky Mountain House her home. Shelley is a band member of Montreal Lake Cree Nation in Central Northern Saskatchewan with roots in Fish Lake Métis Settlement. Formerly a Support Worker at Hull Services, she resigned her job to be a stay-at-home mother to her children. To keep her boys entertained, she began experimenting with arts and crafts and fell in love with mixed media.

Shelley and her husband Mark collaborate on art pieces including paintings, spirit dolls and other creations. Colouring it Forward has published their artwork in Christmas card boxed sets, Indigenous Art & Wisdom Journals and Indigenous art calendars.
